Stan Wawrinka ended Juan Martin del Potro's run at the U.S.
Open, winning in four sets for a second straight trip to the semifinals. The
third-seeded Wawrinka pulled away for a 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory in a
match that ended at 1:20 a.m. Thursday.
Asked whether she expected to get some advice from her
sibling before facing Pliskova, the younger Williams said: “I’m sure she will
tell me something. But I’ll be there. The two-time major champ, who had to save
a match point in his third-round win, will face sixth-seeded Kei Nishikori on
Friday.
In the women's draw there was mixed news for the Williams
sisters. Serena defeated Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets, but older sister
Venus was beaten by tenth seed Karolina Pliskova despite winning the opening
set.
Del Potro, currently ranked just 142nd after three left
wrist surgeries, beat Wawrinka in the second round at Wimbledon in the first
hint that the 2009 U.S. Open champ could again become a contender.
I’ll be ready tomorrow.” Pliskova will be trying to become
only the fourth woman to beat both Williams sisters at the same major, joining
Martina Hingis at the 2001 Australian Open, Justine Henin at the 2007 U.S.
Open, and Kim Clijsters at the 2009 U.S. Open. Sure enough, that's what
happened at the Olympics, when the big Argentine defeated Novak Djokovic and
Rafael Nadal in his stunning run to a silver medal.
