A powerful explosion caused by what the authorities believe
was a homemade bomb injured at least 29 people on a crowded sidewalk in the
bustling Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan on Saturday night, according to the
police. Journalist Josh Marshall lives across the street from the site of the
explosion but wasn't there when it happened.
Police have video from businesses on the street where the
explosion occurred, which could yield key details about the hours before the
attack. Less than three hours after the blast, an object police described as a
"possible secondary device" was found a few blocks away.
He wrote in a post on his site, Talking Points Memo, that a
large building at the location described by authorities has been the site of
"low-intensity construction" for months. The blast, Ochs said,
appeared to come from street level — consistent with reports that it came from
a dumpster — and it blew out the windows of passing cars and an adjacent
mid-rise apartment building
It was later sent to a NYPD range in the Bronx aboard a
special containment vessel, the mayor's office said. Three law enforcement
sources described the find as a pressure cooker with items attached.
Investigators are trying to determine if that individual is connected to the
explosion. Investigators are looking at surveillance video appearing to show a
person near where the explosion at the 23rd street location occurred, according
to a local and federal law enforcement official.
