Brian Tyree Henry holds Atlanta (the place) close to his
heart. Though originally from Fayetteville, North Carolina, the 34-year-old
actor attended Morehouse College as a business major in the early 2000s. You're
one of the last real rappers, man. However, Glover’s intentions are clear: He's
not trying to make the grandiose statements that others have ascribed to his
work. So, let's just enjoy Atlanta for what it is: a funny, well-done show.
That lust for fame follows Alfred for the rest of his day. A
few years and a theater degree later, he's getting back in Georgia's capital
with his latest, and biggest, role: Alfred Miles, a.k.a. Paper Boi, the star
rapper of Atlanta (the show). Not
surprisingly, he also slams "singing-ass rappers" like Fetty Wap
before noting it's "good to see a rapper blow a nigga."
Perhaps Glover, a smart, black man who knows how to navigate
mainstream spaces, can score much-needed success for a show about the
complexities of black people and black culture. Fresh out of jail, he and his
hilarious friend Darius go to grab food, and he is approached by a very
enthusiastic waiter who informs him that he is "the nigga." Why?
Well, "I heard about that shootout you had on Twitter.
Short of cash with parents who refuse to pitch in after his
failure to flush the toilet, Earn makes a living trying to sign people up for
credit cards until a co-worker points out that his cousin is an up and coming
rapper, and he should jump on that wagon before the hip hop artist signs with a
major label.
