At least four people were shot two fatally, as gunshots
erupted at the bustling J’Ouvert celebration in Brooklyn despite NYPD doubling
their parade patrols.
The changes come a year after Carey Gabay, a 43-year-old
lawyer who had worked for Gov. Andrew Cuomo and was deputy counsel of the
state's economic development agency, was shot in the head as two street gangs
exchanged gunshots during J'ouvert festivities.
The West Indian Day parade is a rollicking. Colorful
celebration of Caribbean culture, music, style and food that draws hundreds of
thousands of people each year but it is also a celebration that has been marred
by violence in recent years. The first
shooting happened around 4 a.m. at Flatbush Avenue and Empire Boulevard in
Crown Heights.
At least four people were shot and one person stabbed during
the annual West Indian Day heritage festivities, the NYPD confirmed. Police say
one man and one woman were shot. The man, age 18-22, has died, police say.
