Gomez announced her decision about two weeks after getting
into a social media feud with her ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber, after the
Canadian pop star posted images to his Instagram page of himself and his latest
girlfriend, Sofia Richie.
She is taking time off from the concert series and other
professional commitments to refocus on her health, specifically treating her
anxiety, panic attacks and depression, which are all side effects of having the
disease.
"As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that
I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways," Gomez
tells People in a statement. "I've discovered that anxiety, panic attacks
and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.
"If you can't handle the hate then stop posting
pictures of your girlfriend lol -it should be special between you two
only," Gomez wrote under an image of the new couple. "Don't be mad at
your fans. They love you."
I could've had a stroke." – in an interview with
Billboard in October 2015.
Although she just wrapped up a leg in Australia earlier this
month and is slated to head back onstage in Canada this weekend, the pop star
announced on Tuesday.
I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health
and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time
off.
On announcing why she took time off originally:
"I was diagnosed with lupus, and I've been through
chemotherapy. That's what my break was really about.
